Looking for a Bespoke Engagement Ring?

What Does “Bespoke Jewellery” Really Mean - and Are Some Claims Misleading?

Many jewellery companies describe themselves as bespoke, knowing it’s a powerful selling point for those looking to create something truly unique - especially for an engagement ring. But with so many terms and slogans used across the industry, it can be difficult to tell what’s genuinely custom and what’s simply off-the-shelf jewellery presented differently.

What sets us apart is our truly hands-on, handcrafted approach. Every piece we create is designed and made with you in mind - from the first sketch through to the final finish, ensuring your jewellery is not only bespoke in name, but in every detail. Here, we break down some of the most common, and often misleading, claims.

What Is Bespoke Jewellery - and What Makes It Different?

Bespoke means jewellery designed and made just for you. We believe true bespoke is handmade, where each craftsman leaves a unique human signature - no two pieces are ever identical.

Our roots are in traditional handcrafting, long before CAD, when everything was made from scratch. While CAD can be part of the process, digital designs can be easily reproduced - moving closer to mass production.

For us, real bespoke is about individuality, craftsmanship, and creating something that’s uniquely yours - every time.

What Is “Handcrafted” Jewellery?

“Handcrafted” is a term often used to suggest something artisanal or handmade - but in reality, almost all jewellery is crafted in some way. Even mass-produced pieces involve human input, whether it’s assembling cast components or setting stones. Jewellery is not yet fully automated.

Because of this, “crafted” can apply to many types of jewellery - and we use the term honestly, as not everything we produce today is made entirely by hand.

What Is CAD Jewellery Design?

Today, most jewellery is designed using CAD (computer-aided design), then 3D printed and cast into precious metal. It’s a modern, efficient process that helps reduce costs and allows clients to see realistic renders before confirming their design - giving reassurance and clarity.

It also means pieces don’t need to be physically made or stocked until an order is placed, making it a highly flexible, made-to-order approach used widely across the industry.

What Is Mass-Produced Jewellery?

When we hear “mass-produced,” it often has negative connotations - but the process itself isn’t necessarily плох. Mass production simply means using a mould or CAD file to create the same design repeatedly through casting.

This approach allows for efficiency and consistency, and many pieces you see on the market are made this way.

As a small independent business, we don’t produce jewellery on a mass scale. However, that doesn’t mean we never use CAD or moulds - it just means each piece is created with intention, not bulk production.

When Do We Use Moulds and What Is Our Modular Approach?

When creating a collection, we may use moulds to ensure consistency - particularly for elements like bands. However, we never produce large runs, and most components are designed to be customised by our clients.

We’ve developed a modular system that allows customers to mix and match elements from our collection to create something unique and personal. While this isn’t fully bespoke, it sits close to it - offering creativity, flexibility, and a more cost-effective way to design a one-of-a-kind piece.

What Is Imported Jewellery?

Many UK retailers don’t have the capability to produce their own jewellery and instead rely on pre-made ring mounts. While some are sourced from UK wholesalers, many are mass-imported from overseas, including countries like China.

These mounts are often sent for hallmarking at UK Assay Offices, which is seen globally as a mark of quality and authenticity. However, this can create a grey area in the industry, as imported settings may still pass hallmarking standards despite being lower quality.

In some cases, these pieces are difficult to work on after production - resizing can be risky, and weaker metals may crack or settings fail, potentially leading to stone loss.

What Is Ethical Jewellery?

Many jewellers claim to be “ethical,” but the reality is often more complicated. Recycled metals, fair trade claims, and lab-grown diamonds are not always as clear-cut as they seem, and transparency can vary widely across the industry.

For us, ethics come down to honesty and control over the making process. Handcrafting allows full oversight and avoids some of the compromises often found in mass production methods.

We believe true ethics isn’t just a label - it’s about being transparent and focused on creating a quality piece you can trust.
